Choosing a golf launch monitor can feel like a puzzle, especially when you’re trying to figure out if you're just seeing where the ball went or why it went there. In the world of launch monitors, the "why" is the club data.
So, does it track club data or just ball data? The answer varies wildly by brand and model. Here is the breakdown of the major players to help you decide which one fits your practice style.
Trackman: The Gold Standard
Trackman is famous for its "Optically Enhanced Radar Tracking" (OERT), which combines radar with high-speed cameras.
-
Trackman 4: This is the flagship. It tracks everything. You get extensive ball data and a massive suite of club data (over 15 points), including Club Path, Face Angle, Dynamic Loft, and Attack Angle. It is the benchmark for professional fitting.
-
Trackman iO: Designed specifically for indoor use. It tracks full ball data and essential club data (Club Speed, Path, and Face Angle). Unlike the Trackman 4, it is ceiling-mounted and optimized for limited spaces.
Foresight Sports: Camera Precision
Foresight uses high-speed cameras (photometric) to "see" the club and ball at impact.
-
GCQuad: The king of club data. With four cameras, it provides the most precise club-face data in the industry. It tracks impact location (where on the face you hit it) to a millimeter level.
-
GC3 / GC3S: These use a three-camera system. They track all critical ball data and provide essential club data (Club Head Speed, Smash Factor, Path, and Angle of Attack). Note: The GC3S is often a "software-locked" version typically sold with specific simulator packages.
-
Falcon: This is Foresight’s overhead mount. It tracks both ball and club data similarly to the GC3/GCQuad but from a ceiling-mounted position to keep your floor space clear.
Uneekor: Overhead Specialists
Uneekor is known for its "non-marking" technology, meaning you don't always need stickers on your balls or clubs.
-
EYE XO & EYE XO2: Both models track extensive ball and club data. The EYE XO2 features a third camera and a larger hitting area. They provide high-speed "Impact View" video so you can actually see your club hitting the ball.
-
EYE XR: The newest addition, designed to be more accessible while still providing both ball and club data (including Club Path and Attacker Angle) without the need for club stickers.
ProTee United: The New Challenger
-
ProTee VX: This ceiling-mounted unit has made waves for its value. It tracks both ball and club data instantly. It uses AI and high-speed cameras to measure Club Path, Face Angle, and even Impact Point without requiring special markings on your clubs.
Rapsodo: The Mobile Heavyweight
-
MLM2Pro: Originally focused on ball data, Rapsodo has updated its software for Premium Members to include Club Data. Using its dual-camera system, it can now track Club Path and Speed. While it isn't as exhaustive as a $15,000 Trackman, it’s one of the few at its price point to offer both.
SkyTrak: The Pioneer
-
Original SkyTrak: This unit is primarily a ball data monitor. While it can estimate club speed based on ball speed (Smash Factor), it does not directly measure club path or face angle.
-
SkyTrak+: This is a major upgrade. It adds dual Doppler radar to the camera system, allowing it to measure club data (Club Path and Face Angle) directly without needing stickers.
