What Is the Perfect Size for a Golf Simulator Shed?

If you're planning to build a golf simulator shed, getting the dimensions right is the most important decision you’ll make. The size of your space directly impacts swing comfort, simulator performance, and overall experience.

At Golf 2U, we specialize in golf simulator installation, custom builds, and backyard simulator setups. In this guide, we’ll break down the ideal golf simulator shed size, along with key factors like ceiling height, layout, temperature control, and permitting.

Minimum Golf Simulator Shed Dimensions

At an absolute minimum, your golf simulator shed size should be:

  • Width: 14 feet
  • Length: 16 feet
  • Height: 9 feet

This is the smallest footprint we recommend for a functional home golf simulator setup.

With these dimensions, you can:

  • Safely swing a driver
  • Install a centered hitting area
  • Fit a projector and impact screen
  • Maintain proper distance from screen to golfer

👉 That said, this setup will feel tight, especially for taller golfers or multi-user environments.

Ideal Golf Simulator Shed Size (Recommended Dimensions)

For a more comfortable and premium experience, we recommend:

  • Width: 14–16 feet
  • Length: 18–22+ feet
  • Height: 10 feet

These dimensions create a much better golf simulator room layout and allow for flexibility in your design.

Why these dimensions work best:

  • Wider space allows for both right- and left-handed golfers
  • More depth improves safety and usability
  • Taller ceilings enable full, unrestricted swings

If you’re investing in a backyard golf simulator shed, going slightly larger upfront will significantly improve long-term usability.

Golf Simulator Room Depth (Do You Need Seating?)

Most homeowners don’t just want a simulator—they want a space to relax, watch, and entertain.

If you plan to include a seating area behind the golfer, you’ll need:

  • At least 20 feet of total depth

This allows for:

  • 10–12 feet from screen to hitting area
  • Clearance behind the golfer
  • Seating, bar, or lounge space

👉 A deeper golf simulator room transforms your shed into a true entertainment space.

Ceiling Height for a Golf Simulator Shed

Ceiling height is one of the most important—and most overlooked—factors in a golf simulator build.

9 ft Ceiling (Minimum)

  • Works for most golfers
  • Meets basic golf simulator ceiling height requirements
  • May feel tight with a driver

10 ft Ceiling (Recommended)

  • Ideal for full swings
  • Better for taller players
  • Creates a more open, professional feel

👉 If possible, always aim for 10 ft ceilings in your golf simulator shed.

Flat Ceiling Requirement for Custom Golf Simulator Installations

If you’re planning a custom golf simulator installation (instead of a pre-built enclosure), a flat ceiling is required.

Why a flat ceiling matters:

  • Allows proper mounting of the impact screen
  • Ensures accurate projector alignment
  • Prevents distortion in your image

Vaulted or sloped ceilings can create:

  • Installation challenges
  • Poor image quality
  • Mounting limitations

👉 If your shed design includes a pitched roof, you may need to:

  • Frame a drop ceiling, or
  • Use a full golf simulator enclosure system instead

Temperature Control for a Golf Simulator Shed

A backyard golf simulator shed is exposed to the elements, so proper climate control is essential for year-round use.

Heating Options

  • Electric heaters (simple but less efficient long-term)
  • Infrared heaters (targeted warmth)
  • Mini-split HVAC systems (best overall solution)

Cooling Options

  • Mini-split systems (most effective)
  • Portable AC units (for smaller sheds)

Insulation (Critical for Performance)

Proper insulation is essential for:

  • Comfort
  • Energy efficiency
  • Protecting your simulator equipment

Make sure to insulate:

  • Walls
  • Ceiling
  • Floor

👉 A well-insulated golf simulator shed will perform better and cost less to operate.

Humidity Control

Humidity can impact:

  • Launch monitor accuracy
  • Electronics lifespan
  • Turf and screen materials

We recommend:

  • Dehumidifiers in humid climates
  • Proper ventilation
  • Climate-controlled systems

Electrical and Lighting Setup

Your home golf simulator shed needs to support multiple components:

  • Projector
  • Launch monitor
  • Lighting
  • HVAC system

Plan for:

  • Dedicated electrical circuits
  • Clean cable management
  • Controlled lighting (dim, indirect lighting works best)

Golf Simulator Shed Permits and Zoning

Before building your shed, it’s important to understand local regulations.

Common permitting requirements:

  • Maximum structure size
  • Property line setbacks
  • Height restrictions
  • Electrical permits

In many areas:

  • Small sheds may not require permits
  • Larger structures (like a golf simulator shed) typically do

👉 Always check with your local building department before starting your project.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Golf Simulator Shed Size

The perfect golf simulator shed balances space, comfort, and performance.

Quick Recap:

  • Minimum: 14’ W x 16’ L x 9’ H
  • Ideal: 14–16’ W x 20’+ L x 10’ H
  • Add seating? → Plan for 20 ft depth minimum
  • Use a flat ceiling for custom installations
  • Invest in insulation and climate control
  • Always verify local permitting requirements

If you’re planning a golf simulator shed and want expert help with layout, equipment selection, or full installation, Golf 2U specializes in designing and building high-performance simulator spaces tailored to your home.

Golf simulator FAQ's

How can i convince my wife to let me have a golf simulator?

1. Tell her it's a movie room

2. Get your kids into golf

3. Tell her it'll mean less golf trips and that you'll be home more

How much does a golf simulator cost?

We're not trying to be cagey with this answer but.... IT DEPENDS! There are about 10 different components that make up the golf simulator which will dictate your overall cost. The biggest two things that will determine the cost of your simulator are 1. Which launch monitor you choose and 2. Whether you go with a custom built-in screen or an enclosure.

How much space do I need for a simulator? Will it fit in my house?

To set up a golf simulator, you need to consider the height, width, and depth of the room.

  • Ceiling Height: Ideally, you need at least 9 to 10 feet of ceiling height to swing a golf club comfortably, especially for taller players or those with a high swing. A height of 10 feet is generally recommended for maximum flexibility.

  • Room Width: For the width, 12 feet is a common recommendation, allowing enough space for both right- and left-handed golfers to swing comfortably without hitting the walls.

  • Room Depth: The room should be at least 15 feet deep, which allows space for the golfer to stand, the screen, and the projector or monitor setup. This distance also provides enough room for the ball to travel and the simulator to capture accurate data.

Can a golf simulator improve my game?

Yes! A golf simulator can significantly improve your golf game. Here's how:

1. Practice Year-Round

A golf simulator allows you to practice your swing regardless of weather or season. With consistent, year-round practice, you can improve your muscle memory, swing mechanics, and overall consistency.

2. Data-Driven FeedbackSimulators provide real-time data on every shot, including ball speed, club speed, launch angle, spin rate, and shot dispersion. Analyzing these metrics helps you understand and adjust specific aspects of your swing, like your angle of attack, clubface alignment, or swing path. For example, systems like TrackMan and SkyTrak offer in-depth insights into your ball flight and performance.

3. Course Management

Playing virtual rounds on famous courses helps improve your course management skills. You learn how to approach different types of shots, manage hazards, and make better decisions on club selection. Many simulators allow you to practice on replicas of real-world courses, giving you a better understanding of how to navigate challenging layouts(Golfstead).

4. Targeted Practice

Most golf simulators offer practice modes that allow you to focus on specific aspects of your game, such as driving, iron play, or putting. You can practice in a controlled environment, repeat shots from the same position, and work on weak areas like bunker play or approach shots.

5. Mental Focus and Strategy

Regular simulator practice builds mental toughness by mimicking pressure situations, such as hitting a shot to a small target or making a crucial putt. This can translate into more focus and confidence during real rounds of golf.

By offering detailed feedback, unlimited practice opportunities, and simulations of real-world courses, a golf simulator is an excellent tool for improving your game

Whats the Difference between an overhead launch monitor and a ground based launch monitor?

Honestly, nothing besides the aesthetic and price. The two types of launch monitors perform the same and generally contain the same golf simulator software. It comes down to which aesthetic you prefer. If you're a commercial business/air b n b/ condo builder, you'll probably opt for an overhead as it is fixed in the ceiling and cannot be tampered with. If you're a homeowner, it really doesn't matter.
